Tigers' Wright just wants to be 'part of the team'
Detroit -- David Wright was sitting at his home in Norfolk,Virginia playing a game of MLB 07: The Show with his younger brother when his cell phone rang.
It was his father, who is a police officer in the Norfolk PD. He told David, "Hey, I think you need to call Omar(Minaya)." Then he hung up. David, confused, calls Omar to find out he has been dealt to the Detroit Tigers along with Ruben Gotay and Oliver Perez.
"I was stunned". The All Star third baseman said. "I signed the long extension with the Mets, expecting to stay there for atleast that length of time, but plans change, and I am happy to get a new start in Detroit."
Tigers General Manager Joe DeMayo was asked about the deal:
"David is an amazing young talent, already an All Star at 23, it was tough to lose the players that we did, but there are few players in the game that I would rather have has the centerpiece of this organization for a very long time than David."
Wright will be counted on quite heavily in this Tigers lineup, likely hitting in one of the important spots, either 3rd,4th or 5th. But Wright sees it differently.
"I honestly just want to fit in." Wright said. "The Tigers have a great thing going here, they won the American League title last year, beating tough teams in the Yankees and the A's, so they know what it takes to make it to the World Series, and honestly I just want to be a part of that. I will do all that I can to bring the World Series trophy to the very dedicated fans of Detroit."
When asked about his home run drought that happened after his dual with the Phillies' Ryan Howard in the home run derby, Wright replied, "I don't believe in the home run derby curse. I just for whatever reason was having trouble hitting home runs in the second half, but home runs aren't everything I do, it is fun and all, but it's also fun to smack doubles into the gap, or drive in a run with a single, or take a crucial walk. Or just simply not strike out. I believe there's a lot to the game other than power, but I do not believe my power is lost, I am not that old am I?" (laughs)
Nope David, you are not. You aren't even at your prime years yet, take it slowly. We also asked David about his defense, where sometimes last year he made some amazing plays, but also botched some simple ones.
"Well, I think I made great strides last year. When it is a tough play, I don't know, I don't think about it, it's just reaction, and it just happens. I guess when it's an overly simple play, I may overthink it, but I am working on it, and I expect to be a gold glove caliber defender in short order."
As a writer here in Detroit, I am overly ecstatic to be able to cover the Tigers, and I am going to be happy to cover David here for a long time. Good day Detroit.
